In March 2021, I published a short paper on advertising for malaria medicines during the immediate prewar period, but continuing into the Japanese occupation period. In exploring this subject, I was hoping to get a better sense of who might be using the various medicines, and perhaps when changes took place. In fact, it was clear that advertising itself was changing in this period. The situation under the Japanese occupation changed greatly, as the decisions about use of quinine, for example, were less an issue for doctors and consumers and more of an issue for wartime military authorities. Nonetheless, there was space for some advertising for malaria medicines.
While this is a short, tentative article, it is filled with illustrations from various publications, very interesting by themselves.
